Orioles, RHP Shane Baz agree to five-year, $68M deal
MLB Baltimore Orioles starter Shane Baz Right-hander Shane Baz and the Baltimore Orioles agreed to a five-year contract extension, the team announced Friday.
The extension is worth $68 million, according to published reports.
Baz will make his team debut at Camden Yards against the visiting Minnesota Twins on Sunday.
"This agreement with Shane continues our drive to build a championship-caliber roster. We thank Shane for his commitment to Baltimore, the Orioles, and our great fans," Orioles owner David Rubenstein said in a news release. "Thanks also to (general manager) Mike Elias and the baseball operations group for helping to keep Shane as an Oriole for years to come."
Baz, 26, was acquired in a December trade with the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for a package of prospects: catcher Caden Bodine, right-hander Michael Forret and outfielders Slater de Brun and Austin Overn. Baltimore also parted with a competitive balance draft pick late in the first round (31st overall) in 2026.
Baz was 10-12 with a 4.87 ERA in 31 starts for the Rays last season. In four seasons with Tampa Bay, the former No. 12 overall draft pick in 2017 is 17-17 with a 4.25 ERA in 54 starts.
"We were ecstatic to acquire a pitcher of Shane's talent during the offseason and are thrilled we could come to a long-term agreement to keep him in Baltimore," Elias said.
Baz was a first-round pick (12th overall) by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2017. He was traded to the Rays prior to the 2018 trading deadline as part of the package for right-hander Chris Archer.
Bodine was the No. 30 overall pick in the 2025 draft out of Coastal Carolina, while de Brun was the No. 37 overall pick out of high school in Bend, Ore.
Forret was a 14th-round pick in 2023 and Overn was a third-round selection in 2024. Both players reached Double-A Chesapeake last season.
